Helpful Tips for Securing Your Systems

Remain vigilant to protect against emerging security threats

June 2016 - You have likely read recent news reports concerning large-scale theft and cyber attacks targeting global banks. In light of these events, we would like to provide some general systems security tips.

These tips are minimum guidelines to follow, and we encourage you to consult your own technology security professionals to develop a comprehensive security plan for your institution. You are responsible for the security of your own systems interfacing with FHLBAccess® and other FHLBank Atlanta systems.

  • Use antivirus software and firewalls to help protect your network. It is critical to always keep these systems up to date to protect against constantly emerging vulnerabilities and threats.
  • Be cautious of opening email attachments and clicking on links in messages. Attachments are still the primary source of email viruses. Save and scan attachments for viruses before opening them. If a link looks unusual or contains misspelled words, don’t click on it. When in doubt, don’t click the link.
  • Keep internet browsers, operating systems, and other installed software up to date with the latest security patches.
  • Prohibit internet and email access on computers designated to conduct sensitive functions such as ACH and wire transfer functions.
  • Do not accept or open suspicious error dialogs from within your web browser.
  • Be selective about what you download and always read licensing agreements carefully before installing software. Lookout for agreements that state that other programs will be installed as part of the desired program.
  • Monitor your IT systems, including printers, continuously for any signs of compromise.

New security threats are constantly emerging and grow more sophisticated each day. It is critical for all financial institutions to remain vigilant and maintain appropriate preventive and detective measures.
